The Heart Behind the Story
Bobby Dresden didn’t have an easy road. He grew up in a neighborhood that didn’t forgive weakness, with a body that made him a target, and in a world that never stopped trying to define his worth. But what he had – the one thing that was always his – was a choice about what to do next.
Confessions of a Basketball Junkie is the emotional heartbeat of Gratitude Beacon. We weave real-life lessons into storytelling to help young people find themselves in a character who feels what they feel – and to give the adults who care about them a bridge to start the conversations that matter most.
It’s raw. It’s unpolished. It’s painfully honest. And in many ways, some part of Bobby’s story is your story, too.
A First Look at Bobby’s Story – Coming Soon!

I’m the fat kid. The human piñata everyone wants to bust open.
One afternoon — the last day of school — everything broke at once. Humiliated in front of the whole block, something inside me snapped. I didn’t know what to call it. I just knew I couldn’t keep living this way.
I didn’t have a plan. I didn’t have confidence. I didn’t have hope. What I had was a pair of worn-out sneakers and a choice.
So I walked. The asphalt was hot. The air smelled like rubber and dust. I didn’t know where I was going — only that moving felt better than standing still.
That walk led me to empty courts, blistering summer heat, an old orange basketball, and a real fight to survive. This is my story. Not polished. Not heroic. Not rewritten to sound better than it was. Just the truth. The bullies. The loneliness. The girls. The first love. The addiction I didn’t understand.
All before I turned thirteen.
