Cooking Together as a Family: The Glue That Keeps Us Close

That’s my grandmother’s rice and beans that my wife has mastered. We all love it and that pot didn’t last the night.

There’s something about cooking that you can’t replace. It brings my family together in a crazy way. Our younger kids will flip through a cookbook and find something they want to make. Our older kids love experimenting and making their own meals.

From picking out recipes to going grocery shopping, it brings us together while teaching real lessons. How much something costs. The prep work that goes into a meal. How long it takes to clean up.

And somewhere in the middle are the conversations, the laughs, the funny faces when they don’t like the dish they picked out. Somewhere in the chaos there’s an unseen glue that keeps us together. It’s the process that makes the bond stronger, not the final product.

What’s a habit you had growing up, or have now with your family, that brings you closer? Could be grocery shopping, folding laundry, yard work. It doesn’t have to be pretty or complex.

And if somebody names one you’d forgotten about, tell them. Half of these are things we did for years without noticing they mattered.

The porch light is on. Pull up a chair.
