What Someone Said in Passing That Changed Everything

I had a job in high school and one day they asked me to do phone sales. Problem was I stuttered and stammered when I talked.

Everyone laughed, but I said okay. No guidance, no directions. Just a phone, a list of numbers, and a product to sell.

One of the guys pulled me aside and said, “You don’t have a stuttering problem, you have a thinking problem. You’re trying to talk faster than the thoughts are forming in your head. Slow down and you’ll be fine.”

Before I knew it the sales were coming in. That turned into a process, and that process turned into a career.

He probably doesn’t remember saying it. I’ve thought about it for thirty years.

So what’s something somebody said to you in passing that ended up mattering way more than they knew?

And if somebody’s answer sounds like something you needed to hear, tell them. That’s usually how these get passed around.

The porch light is on. Pull up a chair.
